Kearny High School

The Kearny High School Whole Site Modernization - Phase 2 project represents a significant investment in the future of education for the San Diego Unified School District. Located at 1954 Komet Way, San Diego, CA, this 14.15-acre campus transformation encompasses new construction, modernization, and renovations across all campus buildings except for the gymnasium, auditorium, stadium, baseball field, and CTA classroom building. Building upon Phase 1 upgrades completed in 2019, which focused on HVAC improvements, Phase 2 introduces a new two-story welcome center featuring 10 classrooms, administrative offices, health services, counseling spaces, and a teacher’s lounge. Additional enhancements include the renovation of 12 classroom buildings, the dining hall, campus restrooms, and boys' and girls' locker rooms, with the latter being converted into classrooms. The upgraded softball field and associated facilities further enhance the campus's amenities.

The project also includes comprehensive site improvements, such as accessibility upgrades to site paths, a student commons area between the new welcome center and existing library, enhanced site security, new wayfinding signage, improved pedestrian and vehicular circulation along Komet Way, surface drainage mitigation, and upgraded site utilities. The removal of eight portable classrooms optimizes space utilization, while modernized construction types (TYPE-IIB and TYPE-VB) and mixed occupancies (A-2, B, and E) ensure safety and functionality. Led by SGPA Architecture & Planning with development by SDUSD Facilities Planning & Construction, this project underscores a commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and modern learning environment for students and staff alike.
