Santa Barbara Police Station

The redevelopment project located at 601 Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara, CA, will transform a 1.61-acre site, currently utilized as a surface parking lot, into a modern police facility encompassing a three-story police station and a separate parking structure. The police station, approximately 64,000 square feet in size, will be constructed using Type-VB construction, suitable for buildings of this scale and includes common areas such as a public lobby, multipurpose meeting rooms, staff break rooms, a fitness room, and locker rooms. The building is designated with A-3 (assembly) and B (business) occupancies, reflecting its use for public gatherings and office spaces. Adjacent to it, an 81,000-square-foot parking garage, designed with Type-IIB construction, will provide secure and efficient parking for 236 vehicles, split between police and staff usage, under B (business) and S-2 (storage) occupancies which are ideal for non-hazardous vehicle storage facilities. This structure will also include a subterranean level to maximize space and minimize the building footprint.

The project involves significant grading, with an estimated 22,000 cubic yards of earth moved to accommodate the subterranean elements and ensure structural integrity. In consolidating the Santa Barbara City Police operations from four scattered facilities into this centralized location, the project aims to enhance operational efficiency and community service continuity. This strategic development is not only a significant upgrade in terms of facilities and capacity but also aligns with the M-C (Manufacturing - Commercial) zoning requirements, making it a pivotal project for the city’s infrastructure and service delivery enhancement.
