UU HMH Translational Research Building

The Utah Mental Health Translational Research Building, developed by the Huntsman Mental Health Foundation, is a groundbreaking project poised to transform mental health research and care. Situated in Research Park on the University of Utah campus, this 185,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to open in 2026 and will address critical mental health challenges, including suicide prevention, youth mental health, and care for underserved communities. Designed by Architectural Nexus in collaboration with NBBJ, the building will house the world's only 7 Tesla MRI dedicated exclusively to brain research, enabling innovative studies by an interdisciplinary team of researchers, scientists, doctors, and educators. Supported by funding from the Utah State Legislature and philanthropic contributions, this project is a direct response to the global mental health crisis, which has seen a 13% increase in prevalence over the past decade, particularly among adolescents.

Constructed to TYPE-IIB standards with S-2, B, A-2, and A-3 occupancies, the building will rise to a height of nearly 59 feet and encompass a total area of 311,822 square feet. Featuring distinctive research neighborhoods, flexible layouts, and advanced technological infrastructure, the Translational Research Building is designed to foster collaboration and innovation. It will serve as a global hub for developing mental health solutions, advancing brain research, and delivering improved care to millions. This state-of-the-art facility exemplifies a commitment to addressing one of the most pressing health challenges of our time and will establish Utah as a leader in mental health innovation.
